How AI and Automation are Shaping Tomorrow

AI/ML-driven proof-of-concepts

By Sef Senhaji, Senior Director, Corporate Development

The satellite communications industry is entering an exciting phase as ecosystem players begin to uncover the boundless potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation. These emerging technologies are sparking innovation, paving the way for smarter and more adaptive networks. From early experiments in streamlining operations to initial breakthroughs in real-time decision-making and predictive maintenance, the possibilities are vast and it’s clear that these tools will reshape satellite communications in ways we’re just beginning to imagine.

ST Engineering iDirect has been actively working with ecosystem partners to develop AI/ML-driven proof-of-concepts (PoCs) and to drive innovation. When coupled with Intuition, our advanced cloud-native ground system, satellite operators and service providers will be empowered to streamline operations, scale seamlessly with demand, and adapt to the growing complexities of modern satellite constellations. This will shape a smarter, more efficient future for satellite networks, unlocking opportunities that transform the way we connect and communicate.

Our current AI/ML PoCs include:

  • AI/ML-Driven Phase Noise Detection: Identify and classify phase noise and RF impairment by analyzing patterns and anomalies in real-time.
  • AI-Assisted Troubleshooting: Early detection of network anomalies such as rain fade to reduce system disruptions.
  • AI-Driven Network Assistant: Enables smarter, faster interactions for iDirect-specific network questions.
  • Zero-Touch Adaptive Coding and Modulation: Optimization of channel performance and real-time adjustments.

At Satellite 2025, a colleague and I had the opportunity to demonstrate our AI/ML capabilities during an Amazon Web Services (AWS) sponsored session titled Using GenAI and Machine Learning for Satellite Operations Automation and Optimization. This session highlighted how the integration of cloud-based generative AI is transforming satellite operations across multiple domains and explored how pre-trained AI models are creating new possibilities for automated satellite management and enhanced operational efficiency.

Revolutionizing Satellite Networks Through AI and Machine Learning,I also participated in a panel discussion at the Microsoft AI Tour in Washington DC titled AI in Action: Real Results, Not Just Tech for the Tech of IT with Microsoft-certified partner, Applied Information Sciences (AIS). The conversation focused on best practices for implementing AI projects with an outcome-driven mindset. During the session, I shared how customer feedback from our proof-of-concept demos was instrumental in validating our strategy and refining our priorities. I also emphasized the critical role of pairing the right domain experts with data scientists provided by trusted partners like AIS to ensure success in delivering impactful and actionable AI solutions.

Be sure to stop by our stand to see our demonstrations at upcoming events and read our white paper, Revolutionizing Satellite Networks Through AI and Machine Learning, to learn more about how automation is transforming satellite communications.
