Bandwidth Efficiencies

iDirect employs a number of ways to increase spectral efficiency. These bandwidth efficient features translate into increased availability and cost effectiveness for customers.

Enhanced Waveforms
On the inbound channels, the frequency and phase tracking of waveforms has been improved, allowing for the use of more efficient modulation and coding to achieve up to a 40% increase in data bandwidth.

DVB-S2 Roll-off Factors
On the outbound channel, the minimum DVB-S2 roll-off factor has been reduced from 20% to 5%, allowing for tighter spacing of DVB-S2 carriers and offering up to 13% in bandwidth savings.

 Multicast Fastpath

Multicast content can be segmented from core network traffic and accelerated through an iDirect remote, straight to the end-user. Data throughput can reach up to 40 Mb/s with minimal impact on the overall network performance. With Multicast FastPath, service providers can offer more reliable and affordable plans for organizations that want to expand their use of HD broadcast, IPTV, distance learning, digital signage and other video applications.

2D 16-State
iDirect’s 2D 16-State FEC coding is an extremely efficient inbound coding that provides maximum flexibility to satellite network designs. The FEC coding ranges from 1/2 to 6/7 and are available in three new IP payload block sizes, enabling more granularity and block size choices than turbo product codes or LDPC, which can lead to typical link margin improvements of 1dB.

Easy mapping between existing TPC to 2D 16-State configuration makes implementation quick and simple, as no new network design is required. It provides existing customers a 10-20% increase in their inbound IP throughput without sacrificing link performance, and provides greater flexibility in network design with a more granular selection of block sizes and code rates. This FEC coding is available on Evolution® routers and line cards when using DVB-S2 on the outbound.
