Marine Technologies, LLC Expands Global Maritime VSAT Service In Partnership With iDirect and Intelsat

Broadband network integrated with C-Comm suite of shipboard applications, enabling customers to run bandwidth efficient remote offices

Herndon, Va., September 22, 2009 – VT iDirect, Inc. (iDirect), a company of VT Systems Inc (VT Systems) today announced that Marine Technologies, LLC (MT)/C-CommTM has expanded its partnership with iDirect and Intelsat to extend its VSAT network globally. The new GlobalBroadbandTM service, launched at the Digital Ship Singapore 2009 conference, is designed to extend the MT/C-Comm suite of onboard vessel management and communications applications to customers seeking global continuous broadband communications. iDirect is a world leader in satellite-based IP communications technology.

The MT/C-Comm GlobalBroadband VSAT network is built on the iDirect Intelligent PlatformTM and connects across ten satellites (Ku-band and C-band) operated by Intelsat. Vessels are equipped with iDirect’s Evolution X5 Satellite Router and a marine stabilized antennae designed by MT to operate in both Ku-band and C-band.

Bandwidth efficient onboard applications built for VSAT environment

The GlobalBroadband network serves as a communications backbone to deliver MT’s comprehensive range of shipboard equipment and onboard business applications distributed under the C-COMM brand. These include dynamic positioning systems, integrated bridge systems, logistics applications, global live weather tracking, asset management applications, and remote monitoring and diagnostics. Designed specifically to run over the GlobalBroadband IP VSAT network, the C-Comm applications employ a proprietary data consolidation and compression technology, which makes them 10 to 100 times more bandwidth efficient than standard onboard applications. Applications are bundled onto an IEC accredited network server installed onboard and can be managed remotely.

Comprehensive managed service

MT will deliver the GlobalBroadband VSAT offering through a Service Level Agreement (SLA) plan tailored to each customer’s basic and dynamic communications requirements. Based on an audit of existing and planned applications – including Internet, email, voice and entertainment content – MT established the minimum bandwidth and antenna requirements needed to support remote operations. The audit also assesses a customer’s dynamic communications needs – such as videoconferencing, business applications and remote vessel management – providing budgeted access to additional on-demand bandwidth.
Further, by leveraging iDirect’s Group Quality of Service technology, MT can collaborate with customers to create automated business rules that tie bandwidth allocation to real-time application usage. MT also provides customers with access to a C-Comm portal. This feature enables them to monitor network activity and grants them administrative privileges to control onboard applications and bandwidth allocation.

“Our expanded service is based on years of experience serving the most demanding needs in the maritime industry and is designed to transform VSAT networking into an integration and productivity tool to improve business operations. iDirect is the only platform with the intelligence inside to make this new service model work thanks to its TDMA-based shared network model, advanced Group Quality of Service capabilities, mobility features and network management tools.”

Vice President, Marine Technologies, LLC.
