iDirect Technologies Satellite Networking Solution Deployed in the US Army's Worldwide 'Connect the Logistician Program'

10.26.2004

HERNDON, Va. -- October 26, 2004 -- iDirect Technologies, a privately held company that designs, develops, and markets the fastest, most reliable bi-directional satellite-based broadband access solutions, today announced the deployment of their remote Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) satellite solution supporting the US Army's Connect the Logistician Program. The iDirect solution, incorporated into the Combat Service Support (CSS) VSAT network, allows combat support personnel to transmit supply requisitions in real time. The remote communication capability eliminates the need for couriers to deliver requests in person reducing exposure to potential hostile situations. The initial network launch will call for 200 units to be deployed immediately with a growth potential to well over 1,000 units over the next 18 months.

"We're very pleased at iDirect to see our technology deployed in a way that helps protect the lives of our soldiers," said John Kealey, president and CEO of iDirect Technologies. "The flexibility of the iDirect system and its ease of deployment make it ideal to support troops in the field, and the Quality of Service inherent in the iDirect product line enables voice, video or any communications application necessary to get the job done."

Prior to the deployment of the CSS VSAT, requisitions for parts or supplies often needed to be delivered by a courier driving through hostile terrain exposing them to possible enemy ambush. By enabling real time VSAT transmissions the iDirect solution eliminates the need to deliver disks with requests or other messages. This improved efficiency has significantly reduced the number of convoys necessary to support field units, decreasing troop exposure to the enemy. In addition to greater security, supply chains are more closely integrated improving the efficiency of the entire logistics support process.

As quoted in the AR News Army News Service, "This system is amazing," said Maj. Geoff DeTingo, G4 Planner for the 3ID. "Generally speaking, on rotation, its one-to-four days before there are communications and everybody's talking. With VSATs, everybody was up on the first day within hours. Over the first four days, more than 2,500 electronic parts requisitions were sent via VSATs - more than double the normal requisition data flow."

"The 'Connect the Logistician' program is a perfect application for the iDirect hardware," said John Ratigan, Vice President of Federal Sales. "Today's military requires access to real time information, and they need a platform that is dependable, easy to deploy, scalable, and more than anything, one that can support any mission critical application they rely on. The iDirect system can meet all of the logisticians' current application requirements, and it's scalable and flexible enough to meet tomorrow's requirements".

The iDirect remote VSAT is a simple "one box" solution that provides enterprise-class IP transport and traffic management over satellite networks. The iDirect remote router is a compact set-top terminal incorporating a satellite modem, IP router, TCP optimization over satellite, 3DES Encryption, and QoS/prioritization all in one easy to deploy solution. At the same time, it delivers the highest data throughput speeds in the industry today - 18 Mbps downstream, and 4.2 Mbps upstream. It also offers the only FIPS 140-2 certified built-in encryption.
